REVIEW: Nars Lip Pencils in Cruella and Majella

I have been hearing a lot about these NARS lip pencils from bloggers and Youtubers from all over the world. I finally succumbed and bought my first one 4 weeks ago at Rustan’s Shangrila. It was actually Anna from VDM who made me do it. She posted about the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella on this post. I was like, okay, I have to get it.

Before I went to work, I went to the NARS counter in Rustan’s and asked if they have Cruella. Sadly, they didn’t. I then swatched several shades of their lip pencils. They have Matte and Satin variations. I tried on the much-raved Dragon Girl and I wasn’t impressed by the shade. It looks too pink on me and it’s not as pigmented as I imagined it to be. Then the lady suggested the shade Majella instead from the Satin line and I tried it on. You see, I didn’t have much makeup on then and the color really stood out and complemented my skin well. It’s a deep red with a slightly shiny finish – expected of a Satin lip pencil. In the end, I bought it and also got the radiant creamy concealer (which will have a separate post).

I wore the lipstick to work and was so impressed by the staying power of the lip pencil. I tried it on around 12 noon, ate lunch and dinner and at 10pm, it was still on my lips. It staying on my lips is not a bad thing, you know? It is very lightweight, you can hardly tell you have it on. And I think, it’s very hydrating too because I don’t remember reaching for my Chapstick the whole day. I usually apply lip balm 2-3 times a day over whatever product is on my lips. At 10pm, of course the color isn’t as vibrant as how it was initially but it faded to a very beautiful stain which is still a very noticeable red. It didn’t form a ring on my lips which sometimes happens when I use MAC lipsticks.

I love my MAC lipsticks but this formula tops every formula I’ve tried to date. I’ve tried Givenchy Le rouge and Guerlain lipsticks which are highly recommended formulas by Christine of and I still think Nars lip pencils trumps those 2 brands in my book. Just last week, I finally got Cruella when I went to Gateway Mall. Yes, they have Cruella finally! Cruella is part of the Velvet Matte range and has exceptional pigmentation and formula too.

Overall, I highly recommend the Velvet Matte and Satin lip pencils. They can be slightly expensive than your usual MAC but they’re worth every hard earned penny.
